The History of Carpets

The evolution of carpeting has been affected by social, economical and fashion pressures. From their humble hand-woven beginnings, developments in man-made fibres, loom widths and machine efficiencies brought carpets within reach of the mass market. Thermal and acoustical requirements led to fitted carpets in public buildings, shops and offices. Ingenious manufacturing solutions proliferated from the 1960's, and tiles, needle punched fibres, printing, warp printing, and double faced bonded carpets all increased the ability of the carpet trade to cater for specific areas, price points and the demands of fashion.

In this section we take a look at the history of carpets in the UK, along with a complete timeline of the evolution of carpets throughout the world.
